Describe Web 2.0 and its uses.?
Web 2.0 is not a different web, but a different concept. Essentially it entails a web where data is dynamically driven and customized for each user. Originally the web held mostly static data.

Will Web 2.0 trigger another Dot Com Bust?
Every day a new app comes online and companies write big checks to own them...
Will Web 2.0 trigger another Dot Com Bust?
No, and here's why.
First of all, before the first Dot com bubble bursted, the internet itself was an entirely new concept altogther. It was a sudden change that transformed the concept of marketing into eBusiness. It was an easy trap that lured companies who didn't have the budget to invest in it like it was the "holy grail" hoping it would return 10-fold the amount they invested. This led to irresponsible "borrowing" from other department budgets which tanked a lot of companies.
Fast-forward to the concept of "Web 2.0". Although the potential is great, it's not even in the same ballpark in terms of impact that "Web 1.0" presented. This isn't a sudden change that companies need to leap for. Instead, you will see the bigger companies move first, and smaller ones may never have to. What you see out there now will be sufficient for a long time to come.
You can compare it to the impact Windows NT had. Many small businesses hung onto it long enough for Windows 2003 Server, skipping the jump to Windows 2000 Server. Companies could be thinking along the same lines here regarding the Web 2.0 concept.
You bring up a good question though, and thumbs up for that...
Reply:Although some of the companies will certainly sink, we don't see the massive stock boom this time around. This won't be anything near the dot com bust.
Reply:No, because everybody knows that "Web 2.0" is just a meaningless buzz-phrase used by people who understand nothing about IT who are trying to sell some rubbish nobody needs.
The boom is here, and it concerns:
- IP Telephony
- IT security, including filtering, biometrics, and identity management.
In other words - real stuff, not web-development nonsense.
Reply:It's possible. Everything comes in cycles.
Reply:1) Same as the period character (.). In DOS, Windows, and OS/2 systems, the dot is used to separate a filename from its extension. For example, the filename CONFIG.SYS is pronounced config-dot-sys.
(2) In bit-mapped representations, a dot is a single point, the smallest identifiable part of an image. Laser printers, for example, create characters and images by printing patterns of dots. Likewise, monitors display images as arrays of dots. The resolutions of devices are often measured in dots per inch (dpi ).

Reply:Web 2.0 is a marketing term for the new way of making web pages.
One of these ways is to allow content to update dynamically without a page refresh (Like Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail). Also known as AJAX (another marketing term). However the method to do this has been around for a while, just nobody took notice until Google took notice. Amazing what a little competition in the marketplace can do.

Which web 2.0 language should I use to set up my own social networking site?
I'd like to set up a social networking site, but I only know HTML and basic CSS. What should I learn to set up a profile page system much like myspace or facebook? And how is the best way to learn?
Which web 2.0 language should I use to set up my own social networking site?
You need to learn a server side language (ie Asp, php, cfm, etc). Work with a database structure (ie postgre, mysql, sql, access etc)
and look into AJAX for serving up goodies and applications.

Go and read this page it explain pretty much everything about Web 2.0 for you.

Reply:it means a lot of different things to different people.
I think Tim O"Reilly coined to term, meaning web sites with more opportunities for people to contribute stuff. Social sites are an outgrowth of this.
To some it means an endless variety of things, cut and pasted together from different sources. This may include plagiarism, which is all of a sudden not such a big deal anymore.
What everyone agrees on is that content is not decided by webmasters or databases alone, but by contributing visitors as well.
No wonder people are confused.

What is Web 2.0?
A concept that is supposed to have dynamic content for the users. Content which the users want. So you choose what you want.
It's a way so the client (you) can have an impact.

Does mobile web 2.0 allow you to visit html web sites or do you have to use the wap protocol?
I'm not sure if it is the same on all phones, but on mine (LG VX8300 from Verizon Wireless) I can view HTML pages, although they tend to be difficult to read because of the large images and such. Usually, it is a good idea to stick to wap sites unless it is a very simple html website that you want to view.

What is Web 2.0 and how do I use it to drive traffic?
Web 2.0 is any website where users control most of the content.
Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Gather, Hubpages, Squidoo and so on.
There are a number of ways to get traffic from these sites. Your strategy depends on what website you're using. For instance with YouTube you would create an informative and interesting video that mentions your website link during and/or at the end of the video.
You also want to include buttons on your website or blog for people to easily bookmark your website in social bookmarking sites such as Del.icio.us, Furl, etc.
You can also put a "Digg This" button on your site for people to easily submit your blog post to Digg.com and get votes for it, bringing more visitors.
Stumbleupon is another website that allows visitors to vote on your content. The more people who give it a "thumbs up", the more traffic you'll get from Stumbleupon.
With social sharing websites like Squidoo or Hubpages, you would create an interesting "lens" for Squidoo or "Hub" for Hubpages. You want it to be full of valuable, useful information. Adding pictures and videos makes it more popular.
If you use the right keywords in the title of your lens or hubpage, it can get ranked in the search engines pretty easily, bringing free traffic. You then funnel that traffic over to your website by mentioning it on your lens/hubpage.
Like someone else mentioned, Twitter is another good one. It's helpful not only for getting traffic, but building a relationship with people as well.
Same thing with Facebook. You want to be making friends with like minded people who are interested in what you have to offer, and keep them updated on what's going on with your business (without being salesey or promotional) Instead, you create Facebook pages and/or groups and regularly add useful tips, videos, etc. for them.
Include a link to your website, and if they are interested in what you have to offer after seeing your free tips, they will visit your site. (and be even more likely to buy from you because you've already established a relationship with them and proven you are trustworthy.)
What is Web 2.0 and how do I use it to drive traffic?
Hey Shiraz,
A perfect example of Web 2.0 is MySpace. When MySpace first came out, people set up their pages to look like websites. They then gave out their url to MySpace and drove traffic to their MySpace pages.
Today we have Facebook, and others. Facebook is great because it allows more functionality than MySpace. You can list your blog or website feeds and each time your update your page(s), your friends on Facebook instantly know about it. This helps in driving traffic.
Now I use Facebook and Twitter, Twitter is awesome because it is called microblogging and you can do this from your cellphone.
People are using Twitter to drive traffic to...check it out here is my twitter...http://www.twitter.com/offbeatnews

If you ahve junk it wont. No one will tell other people about the spam you sent them.

How does Web 2.0 differ from Web 1.0?
Web 2.0 and 1.0 are very vague, open-ended ideas about what kinds of things modern web sites can do. Usually the emphasis is placed on collaboration, community and communication. Facebook and MySpace are usually held up as very successful examples of a Web 2.0 model. There is nothing hard or specific about what makes Web 2.0 or 1.0 - it's kind of like saying something "is SO 1980." There is no specific criteria for determining this; it's just a label that describes a collection of styles, ideas, and philosophies.
Sometimes you may hear that Web 2.0 is Ajax, or Web Services, or big fonts and certain color palettes. Those aren't really Web 2.0 in the correct sense - we only see these things widely used on Web 2.0 sites because they are popular design elements, and Web 2.0 sites are very contemporary and recently designed - obviously they will use the latest trends.
How does Web 2.0 differ from Web 1.0?
Web 1.0 was about reading, Web 2.0 is about writing
Web 1.0 was about companies, Web 2.0 is about communities
Web 1.0 was about client-server, Web 2.0 is about peer to peer
Web 1.0 was about HTML, Web 2.0 is about XML
Web 1.0 was about home pages, Web 2.0 is about blogs
Web 1.0 was about portals, Web 2.0 is about RSS
Web 1.0 was about taxonomy, Web 2.0 is about tags
Web 1.0 was about wires, Web 2.0 is about wireless
Web 1.0 was about owning, Web 2.0 is about sharing
Web 1.0 was about IPOs, Web 2.0 is about trade sales
Web 1.0 was about Netscape, Web 2.0 is about Google
Web 1.0 was about web forms, Web 2.0 is about web applications
Web 1.0 was about screen scraping, Web 2.0 is about APIs
Web 1.0 was about dialup, Web 2.0 is about broadband
Web 1.0 was about hardware costs, Web 2.0 is about bandwidth costs

Web 2.0 ..what's that?
I don't know.
Web 2.0 ..what's that?
Web 2.0 is a paradigm where websites are more dynamic and feature user generated content. Another part of the web 2.0 paradigm is more responsive and interactive web pages designed with multiple technologies, like server and client side code to make the page more interactive. The idea is to get web applications up to speed with more traditional Windows and MacOS (and Unix) applications. For example, the new Yahoo Mail Beta is a lot like Outlook Express and uses AJAX to make the page appear to not be changing or posting back (page doesn't redraw itself when something changes).

Reply:In business and technology, Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2003[1] and popularized by the first Web 2.0 conference in 2004[2] , refers to a perceived second generation of web-based communities and hosted services — such as social-networking sites, wikis and folksonomies — which facilitate collaboration and sharing between users. O'Reilly Media titled a series of conferences around the phrase, and it has since become widely adopted.
Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to Web technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the web as a platform. According to Tim O'Reilly, "Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform." [3]
Some technology experts, notably Tim Berners-Lee, have questioned whether one can use the term in a meaningful way, since many of the technology components of "Web 2.0" have existed since the early days of the Web.[

Web 2.0 - Do you like it?
The answer boards I feel are too time consuming. Easy way to get answers might be to check a trusted source
Web 2.0 - Do you like it?
Web 2.0 in its current deployment, is nothing more then a superficial "streamlines" user interface.
While some people use more advanced technology, this is not common for people claiming to be 2.0.
It's all hype.

What is web 2.0? being a good web designer how i develop the web 2/0 skill?
Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform."
he phrase "Web 2.0" hints at an improved form of the World Wide Web; advocates suggest that technologies such as weblogs, social bookmarking, wikis, podcasts, RSS feeds (and other forms of many-to-many publishing), social software, Web APIs, Web standards and online Web services imply a significant change in web usage.
While interested parties continue to debate the definition of a Web 2.0 application, a Web 2.0 web-site may exhibit some basic common characteristics. These might include:
* "Network as platform" — delivering (and allowing users to use) applications entirely through a browser.[8] See also Web operating system.
* Users owning the data on the site and exercising control over the data.[9][8]
* An architecture of participation that encourages users to add value to the application as they use it.[8][2] This stands in sharp contrast to hierarchical access-control in applications, in which systems categorize users into roles with varying levels of functionality.
* A rich, interactive, user-friendly interface based on Ajax or similar frameworks.
* Some social-networking aspects.
* Enhanced graphical interfaces such as gradients and rounded corners (absent in the so-called Web 1.0 era).
Skill Set reqd.

A Web 2.0 website may typically feature a number of the following techniques:
* Rich Internet application techniques, optionally Ajax-based
* CSS
* Semantically valid XHTML markup and the use of Microformats
* Syndication and aggregation of data in RSS/Atom
* Clean and meaningful URLs
* Extensive use of folksonomies (in the form of tags or tagclouds, for example)
* Use of wiki software either completely or partially (where partial use may grow to become the complete platform for the site)
* Use of Open source software either completely or partially, such as the LAMP solution stack
* XACML over SOAP for access control between organisations and domains
* Weblog publishing
* Mashups
* REST or XML Webservice APIs
hope this will help

Do I even need a USB 2.0 web cam?
I have a Pentium 4, 1.6 Gig 256RAM laptop
They say cams consume a lot of working memory on a pc
Do you think I even need a fast trnsfer USB 2 cam like 1.3mp one?
I mean how do I find out if my laptop can even handle it...(I do have a USB 2.0 port)
do you know or had similar issues...
Any help appreciated till death do us part
Do I even need a USB 2.0 web cam?
USB 2.0 device has a much faster tranfer rate than usb 1.xx. All you need is a usb 2.0 port and you're good too go. USB 2.0 is also backward compatible with older usb 1.xx. Higher transfer rates will give you better picture quality on video---1.3 Megapixel is ok for web cam, 2-3 Mp is even better.
Reply:I have this problem with my PC when I installed USB cable in it it told me the USB port I have was lower than that but it worked my camera is working fine , I think you have no problem using it.

What is Web 2.0? Which sites are Web 2.0? How to find out whether a site is Web 2.0 or not?
Web 2.0 is more a descriptive term than something with a specific definition. Some aspects of Web 2.0 sites are:
- an API (programming interface) which allows people to build their own interface to the data
- use of AJAX (javascript and XML) to communicate between the browser and the client rather than (or in addition to) HTML
The reason there's no clear dividing line for a Web 2.0 application is that a web site might use SOME javascript/XML, or have an API that exposed SOME of its functionality.
As usual, the Wikipedia has some background on the terms (links below). You can also see the programmableweb web site for some examples.

Tell them to load the newer framework.
It can co-exist on the same server as 1.1.
Reply:what is preventing your server from being upgraded to 2.0?
Reply:You have to talk to the server people. When you talk to them tell them to change the website .net version to 2.0
If you plan to run AJAX enabled website make sure you tell them also. web.config needs some extra work for that.

If I have a verizon family plan do i get free acess to mobile web 2.0?
Ok so i got this fone yesterday and it was an add on to my parents family plan so i was wonderin if i get free access to the mobile web... thanks.. o yeah n i think i have the unlimited txting plan if that helps
If I have a verizon family plan do i get free acess to mobile web 2.0?
Mobile web is $5/month for America's Choice plans.
If you guys are on the new Nationwide plan then mobile web is included. It all depends on the price plan that your family share is on.
Yahoo answers probably isn't the best forum to ask questions about your cell phone account, btw. Unless you have something more specific.

What should I do about my Web 2.0 project?
I have an idea for a new type of website which I believe people will truly appreciate and spend a lot of time on it. I spent almost a year working on the business plan, researching potential competitors (as there is no direct competitors as of now), working on the features, creating documents. Basically, all I need to do now is to pull up my sleeves and start coding. The problem is that I don't have time as I have a job and a family. I estimated that it will require me more than 2 years of coding before I can release a stable version.
So, I'm thinking about selling my idea (probably very hard as I don't want to disclose information for free), working for a potential competitor where I could manage this product or finally create an open source project where everyone could work on it. What are my other options? I would really want this project to go ahead as I think it will change the way people live experience and search the Internet.
What should I do about my Web 2.0 project?
well to be honest there's a factor that your idea could be complete crap, which is why I doubt anyone will be willing to pay you and if you offer it for a lower price - you'll feel cheated if its a good idea. Sadly there are situations like yours where its a great idea but out of fear of losing out on profit, the idea dies with the creator.
I have several ideas and have the background and time (somewhat not really) to create some of my own ideas. I'm planning on getting to work on one of my ideas, but as of yet I'm managing another site I'm working on which is doing quite well. The hardest part is setting it up, and the worst part is seeing an idea just die even though you know it would do well. What I suggest is that if you have the money to do so, try commissioning the work out to others (outsourcing), it could pay off for you - but I think you're a bit afraid of losing the idea.
Anyways, my words of experience + wisdom for you - if its an application it will take years to get it right (assuming its a one man job, and assuming its a complicated task - time and skill of course influence this). If its a website it could take as long as 2-3 months depending on the complexity. Try doing it yourself, but if you really can't or don't have the time may try working with someone you can trust or create a forum and ask for other peoples help (by citing your idea on a site or forum you had the privillege of being able to datestamp the time you started your work - so if others copy you- you can always point to your site which probably will have existed longer then the copier and thus it shows you were the creator or innovator first). I'm curious about your idea, what theme does it fall under - like is it an entertainment site, news, sports, etc (you don't have to give out the idea obviously).
Anyways, good luck.
Reply:I have never heard of any website taking 2 years to code. How many hours per week are you planning on putting into this? I would round up maybe a friend or two to aid in the coding process. Also, maybe try to pick up a copy of Dreamweaver as this will allow you to quickly design the site and refine the code later.
Reply:Your idea has me intrigued, but there is an issue. 2 years of coding would put your project back a long ways for Web 2.0 standards. I guess if I were you, I would go in and post on a bunch of forums for Linux, CSS, web design, internet marketing, etc. and see what kind of coalition you can get for R%26amp;D. Look at all the distros of Linux. Very rarely is it just one person designing that and now Linux is becoming a mainstream deal.
You need lots of people in on this and 100% credit can't go to you. If you want nothing but to sell your idea, go to an intellectual property business and sell it to them. That's what they do, buy ideas, reformat and sell to prospective buyers.

What according to YOU is web 2.0?
Now that we are pretty much familiar with web2.0 platforms, lets try and define it accordingly .. Lets not give reference to articles or online tutorials. Lets try ourselves!
What according to YOU is web 2.0?
Isnt it the second version of the internet? I think its because the first version ended the world back in 2009. Where can I get web 2.0?
Reply:Loads of photoshop, Ajax, more photoshop, very fast load speeds, instant server updates and lot more of photoshop.

What is the coolest Web 2.0 site out there?
Tell me about your favorite and the most promising web2.0 site out there.
Why do you think they will become successful?
What is the coolest Web 2.0 site out there?
Given the phrasing of your question, I assume the "they" you are referring to is the people who have built my most favorite site. But, to be safe, I will answer the question in a creative way: I am going to list a variety of web 2.0 sites and tell you what they do and why each will be successful. I am also going to focus upon relatively new web 2.0 sites, as you will have heard of the less new ones. I hope you don't mind.
Web 2.0 Winners, in order of least favorite to most favorite:
14. LifeIO (http://lifeio.com/) – The coolest calendar, photos, contacts, sharing, application I have seen in a long time. It is a webified mash-up of the essential stuff you need to manage your life. Very well designed. Well executed.
Reason they will win: the integration of these tools inside a socially aware web app is truly unique. They will get snapped up by Yahoo! Or AOL within the next six months. I predict Yahoo! Since LifeIO’s CEO is an ex-Yahoo! Exec.
13. Sharpcast (http://www.sharpcast.com/) – These guys synchronize all your content and apps across your mobile, desktop, laptop, Windows or Mac machines. The cool thing is how you can use files across devices, just they way people actually work.
Reason they will win: They are solveing a real problem. They will be able to sell their solution for a price that users will tolerate and make pleanty of money off of the millions of people who will buy it.
12. Vpod.tv (http://blog.vpod.tv/) – YouTube is great, but they lack really great online video editing capabilities. These folks have nailed that one. They also have a really great sharing and monetization model.
Reason they will win: They will struggle to position against YouTube, Google Video, etc., but like LifeIO, they are on the fast track to be bought, probably by AOL, or someone like that.
11. Webaroo (http://www.webaroo.com/) – Search the web when you are not connected. This product is based upon figuring out the web’s 80/20 rule of which sites are the most probably relevant sites and making them available in a web search engine that is available offline.
Reason they will win: Again. They solve a real world problem in a cleaver way. I would expect Ask.com or some second-tier search player to make a move to buy them before they get too big.
10. ZiXXo (http://zixxo.com/cmn/Homepage.aspx) – Merchants can create online coupons that can be redeamed by users in the physical shopping realm for a fraction of the price that I would cost them to produce the same coupons and distribute them via newspaper or direct mail. These coupons could even be made available in the context of web sites or blogs, etc.
Reason they will win: They are so drastically reducing the cost of coupons, and making them available to consumers so conveniently, the money drivers will cause it to succeed, as they apply from a variety of angles: from the advertiser, to the person wanting to save on products. It will just work well, and then make their money off of service fees for millions of coupons printed by people wanting to save money.
9. Ether.com (http://www.ether.com/) – Lets you earn money selling what you say. Think of this as a place you can offer your over-the-phone advice and get paid for it. I can think of a bunch of uses for this. One of the funnier ones is driving directions. Call me up from your cell phone and for $0.50 I, or one of my pool of answerers, will give you directions from your current location to whereever you are trying to go. Or, I am a family counsellor, and I get calls all the time from clients off hours. This way I can charge them a small fee for talking through their crisis with them.
Reason they will win: People have been monetizing products on the web for a long time. Now, they can sell their services. It is a natural and logical next step, and they have made it super easy to set up.
8. SoonR (http://www.soonr.com/web/front/home.jsp) – Turns you PC into an personal connectivity server. My favorite thing about it is the skype support, which illustrates the technology model, from any cell phone, I can place a call using my PC’s instance of Skype and conference me into any SkypeOut number I want to call. So now I get free long distance on my cell phone… Bye Bye overage charges!
Reason they will win: Market size and awareness of pain will combine to make this compelling product a must have. They will continue to leverage their core IP to integrate with more and more services that are web-based.
7. Vaestro (http://vaestro.com/index.php) – Allows people to establish and participate in forums by recorded messages (voice comments), related to any topic they choose.
Reason they will win: Matt Ready has created a tool that is easy to use. He will benefit from the amazing attention to user-gnerated content, including that which can be generated as a response to podcasts, or vidcasts. Voice is a much more compelling medium than text for communicating certain kinds of information.
6. Simpy (http://www.simpy.com/) – This tool is great because it incorporates users browser bookmarks as social tags. Then it also lets users continue to bookmark online. By combining their existing bookmarks, they feel really comfortable with adding new bookmarks online, where those bookmarks can benefit all other simpy users.
Reason they will win: People love search and discovery, they love their bookmarks, and will love how Simpy adds the benefit of all user bookmarks in retrieving their search results.
5. Findory (http://findory.com/) – A blog search engine that will let you create dynamic RSS feeds that will give you results of new blog content that matches a set of search terms.
Reason they will win: Blogs are hot. This is a hot blog search engine. If they can get their ad model to work, they will win big, even with Google Blog Search out there, especially for their RSS feed support.
4. Jookster (http://www.jookster.com/) – Social searching tool. Allows you to receive search results based upon what others in Jookster’s user base have found to be interesting. You can tell how credible the results are based upon the number of degrees of separation between you and the recommender you are.
Reason they will win: Better search, especially for communities of interest. They, too, will have to get their adSense like ad model worked out, but if they can, they will attract millioins of users.
3. StumbleUpon (http://www.stumbleupon.com/) – This is one of the coolest web site discovery tools I have ever seen. You put in your interests and the system helps you discover web sites you would probebly never have found on your own.
Reason they will win: People trust the recommendations of friends more than they trust any other source, when it comes to advice. The approach taken here, and with Jookster, allows a person to discover what other people like them have found useful. That is compelling. Now, they will have to outrun Google and Yahoo!, but given their unique approach, they have less to worry about in that regard than others. They, too, will be an acquisition target, but I struggle with exactly who I envision for a suiter.
2. Plum (http://plum.com/) – Plum lets you really easily aggregate (pack rat) web sites you have visited, making them fully searchable, and also enabling social interaction around the content of the sites.
Reason they will win: People are packrats, and they love to share and show their collections of stuff with others. They also like to find the content they have previously seen, especially for the use case where one has read somehting, found it mildly interesting, and then had someone ask a question that brings it more to life, and they then want to tretrieve it instantly, mail off a link, etc.
1. NetVibes (http://www.netvibes.com/) – I think you should make this your new home page! Like Google’s new custom home page feature, but far more exciting from an extensibility perspective. Meaning, they guys have a great start on delivering on a vision of a time when any web 2.0 API based app can be simply incorporated into a user’s portal page. That means these guys could be a sort of application foundation for building integrated web appilcations that fit into a portal-like, user definable interface.
Reason they will win: A more seamless integration of the many disparate web 2.0 applications will become increasingly important. This product will act as a platform upon which the user can assemble all his favorite web 2.0 tools into a single experience, without the help of a programmer.
So that is the list!
Just for grins, here are some more established web 2.0 sites:
- Technorati
- Digg
- del.icio.us
- PRWeb
- Flickr
- 37signals (basecamp, campfire, tada lists, backpack, writeboards)
- jotspot, especially their wiki stuff (amazed at the breadth of their offering, now that they have been out for a while)
- Google: - writely - Google Spreadsheets - Google alerts
- Yahoo - Flickr - Yahoo news - Yahoo Podcast Search
- PodZinger (podcast and vidcast search engine)
... and the list goes on...
Hope that helps!

What is the significance of Web 2.0?
I'd like to find out how this is going to change the way we use the web as well as societal implications.
What is the significance of Web 2.0?
By Web 2.0, I assume you mean the Yahoo! My Web tool. I actually use this a lot. You can think of it as something along the lines of "share-able" bookmarks. However, one of the really cool things about it is the ability to tag the pages on the net that you come across. Since the tool is in the Yahoo! Toolbar it's very easy to use (you don't have to go to a special page to add to your saved pages).
The tagging is really the key aspect, though. See the problem is, search engines can only "guess" at what they think the purpose of the pages are. They crawl millions of pages on the internet all the time, and new ones each day. So when you enter a search request, they have to go through that list and try and say "this is what you want, this is not what you want... etc."
Tagging allows communities (you, you and your friends, or everyone) to explicitly mark pages. This means that you can check out sites that are tagged to have, say "French Cooking" without neccessarily "being lucky" with a search. It saves TONS of time, and often you can find things you never would have thought of looking for.
Try it out for a few days, and check out the community tags section. I think you'll really be surprised at how useful it is.
Reply:Web 2.0 is the folk name of the new Programing way that is revolutioning the internet! It users CSS AJAX JAVASCRIPT, ETC! With web2.0 we can use programs like Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, using you web browser, that implies that on the future we will not use Sistem Operators like Windows, we just will need a Terminal Browser and all program will run via Web!! Since Web 2.0 is considered the revolution of the web, programs like skype, bittorrent, etc are considered web2.0 complaints too!

Pointers for starting up a Web 2.0 business?
The question might be a bit abiguous, but hear me out :)
I currently have an idea that I'm developing that will utilise the formidable userbase of social networks (MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, Friendster, Hi5 etc) to market my "service" or "product".
Essentially I'd like to set up a website where people can register and put certain details on this site, then for an application/box (that dynamically self-updates when they update on my site) to be present on that person's profile page of their prefered social network site.
Having looked into most social networking sites, I know there's a degree of flexibility whereby you can add components onto the page. (facebook API, myspace inserting scripts etc).
I guess my specific questions would be:
Would it be possible to link to my webpage from the social network with a click, are there any costs involved?
How should I go about writing a web application or design a website? Would I need a business angel/VC for this?
Pointers for starting up a Web 2.0 business?
Technology speaking, you are going to be limited by the Open API allowed by each site you want to mash-up. You will also want to look into the AJAX based technology called mash-ups.
Most likely there will be some startup costs for either the equipment and software yourself but you can get up and running quickly with a hosted solution. This is where you pay a company that is already managing several hundred servers to manage one for you.
Other costs may come when you need to get access to richer API or start to get past casual usage. Companies do need to be compensated for their bandwidth usage. I think, for example, Yahoo or Google lets your free account use 1,000 request per day which is more than enough to get familiar with the API but no where near enough to run a business based on access to this data.
Start with a business plan and realistic P%26amp;L and that will tell you whether you should proceed or not. The VC is going to ask anyway.
Reply:Marketing is also an important consideration on these social networks.
Facebook just opened up their pay-per-click advertising model, which really looks promising!
Here's a good article about it:

Are Yahoo Answers and other Web 2.0 communities eroding real knowledge and scholarship?
I am currently reading a book that is called "The Cult of the Amateur". It is written by an ex silicon valley insider and has an extremely interesting take on the proliferation of amateur advice and information.
He claims that the current web communities that do not put any weight into credentials or fact checking are putting forth an irreparable amount of misinformation. Because there is no accountability on the website none of the rules of good writing or journalism need apply to the writers.
Also the commentary on the news and other events has so overshadowed the actual news and primary pieces of literature that they are losing sales. If the trend continues eventually secondary commentary will actually bankrupt the source of its news.
Personally, do you think that communities for and by amateurs, yahoo answers, wikipedia, blogs, are eroding knowledge, truth, and traditional media sources?
Are Yahoo Answers and other Web 2.0 communities eroding real knowledge and scholarship?
Knowledge cannot be eroded, merely forgotten, or untapped.
Good argument for the credentialed, schooled and privileged.
Begs to ask, "so there is no knowledge that can come from someone without a piece of paper, from another person, saying they know what they are speaking about, and you do not?"
That said, I dislike talkers who obviously don't know what they are talking about. In my case if I don't know, I don't try to pretend. I ask questions of those who are educated or are doing the thing discussed.
Reply:I agree. It's unfortunate that people are growing up thinking that this is the proper way of things. I personally think it's good for so many ways for people to express themselves, but when no one understands the difference between fact and opinion any longer, what then?

The success of this model is affected by factors such as: relationships, production, diffusion, and engagement.
Truth can never be eroded because it exists for what it is. Newspapers and publications were blamed for this sort of thing before hence the saying 'don't believe everything you read'. If someone does believe something they have read without researching it then that person has neither gained nor lost knowledge, he/she has simply conceded to allow other to think on his/her behalf.
Governments and business don't make decisions based on one or two blogs so the need for qualified (verifiable) and quantified academic research will always be there.

Technical feasibility for my web 2.0 start up.?
I was wondering if you guys could determine the technical feasibility of an idea I have. It is a sort of text SMS reminders on demand web application. Essentially, a user signs up for the service, where they will have two columns to input information they want to remember. One column would be information such as "driver's license," "John Doe's home address," "Jane Doe's work Phone number." On the other column there would be the actual information (12345678, 123 sesame st. new york ny 10012, (123) 4567890). They save this information, so when they forget this information, all they would have to do is text on their cell phone "driver's license number" to a special number and the service would text back 12345678. Same thing for the other information.
It doesn't really matter what language or framework I will use to build this app, most likely the ubiquitous php/mysql combination. Also any feedback on the idea itself would be great as well.
Thanks!
Technical feasibility for my web 2.0 start up.?
That's certainly possible. You can do this with really any programming language PHP probably the best though.
A couple of things that you might want to realize about it and I'm sure that you probably have but I will mention them anyway.
Cost. You would need to set this up through a service provider. Clickatell.com is a very popular one that has some decetn rates. You need to realize that each SMS message costs to go out so just be aware of that.
Security would need to be really tight with this if it ever got into the wrog hands it could be disatrous. So some kind of security would need to be devised.
Just a though on the whole idea.....I think that it is great. I Think it would be cool to implement some kind of a backup service for phones so that if something happened to the phone all the information stored on the phone would be backed up somehow names, addresses, emails,music...etc. I know I've lost my phone that had all my contacts in them and it took me a long time to get this back.
Just my thoughts. If you need any more advice I do web programming and could advise you on costs and technology involved./

What exactly is Web 2.0?
I've seen this mentioned on a lot of blogs and news sites. I assume it's some sort of generational label, as in the "new version of the Web." But who coined it, and why?
What exactly is Web 2.0?
Hi,
The following essay by Jesse James Garrett gave birth to the the AJAX terminology and subsequently Web 2.0. The language is lucid enough for a newbie to grasp the concept.

How do you pronounce Web 2.0?
A friend says it's "Web two point zero"
I think it's "Web two point oh"
Maybe a variant neither of us use...
Is there even an accepted right answer?
How do you pronounce Web 2.0?
usually its pronounced "web two point o"
but what does it matter?
Reply:it is web two point oh.
Reply:depends on regions and how typically you pronounce stuff. usually when pronoucing version # its oh unless it's like version 5.0789 but it depends on the person
Reply:should be two point zero. o or oh refers to a letter not a number. some people refer to zero as naught or nought
Reply:No, there isn't an accepted right answer because it all comes down to however you pronounce the number '0'. It's just a version number, your pronounce it however you ever would, the fact that it's part of an internet buzzword makes no difference.
Reply:usually WEB TWO POINT ZERO. trust me, don't care what people around you say. care about what experts say and how you could say it in front of a proper computer literate. practise saying ''web two point zero'' ...if people say something else, make sure you understand it, but never say it the way they are.
Reply:ur both wrong. its pronounced Web 2.0
Reply:Hmm - I have just come back from a conference in the USA where it was pronounced web 2 dot oh.
Reply:This generally depends on how you have been taught to read the 0 character. As a programmer, I could argue that it's read Web 2 point null, but then I'd get laughed at. It works either way, and as long as you can understand what each other is talking about, that's what matters.

I'm getting the LG Voyager for Christmas, I was considering changing my plan to the unlimited mobile web plan. My question is, is it worth it? I mean will I be able to surf the web just as if I'm on a PC, or am I limited to the sites verizon allows. Also will the web experience be relatively fast or would it be like dial up on a pc?
Please answer indepthly and the more info you can give me the better. You dont have to rush to be the first answer, points will be given to the most accurate and indepth response.
Lg Voyager? Verizon Mobile Web 2.0? Help!!!!!?
The voyager does have full HTML capabilities, so you will be able to view virtually any site you like. However, depending on the extensiveness of the site, the phone may respond a little sluggish. When it comes to loading HTML pages, few can match the Verizon network for speed. In terms of cost... If you're on the America's Choice plan, it simply costs you airtime (plus a $5/mo access fee). If you are on the replacement to the America's Choice (called Nationwide), there is no monthly access fee OR airtime charges for using the mobile web, however there is a $1.99/Mb usage fee. Basically even though the Voyager is capable of full HTML browsing, it is billed through Verizon the same as Mobile Web is on the non-HTML phones. So if you know you'll do a lot of web surfing, I'd get the Vcast Vpak for $15/mo that covers ALL data usage charges. Check out my profile for more information if you like... hope this helps! Good luck!!
Reply:The whole concept of Mobile Web is to allow you to access websites, knowing that you can't get the experience of a full-blown website on a cellphone.
VZW doesn't necessarily limit where you want to go. In fact, from my experience, they don't. What _does_ limit you are the websites that can issue mobile-based webpages. For instance, Yahoo Mobile is not as fully loaded as the Yahoo you see on your PC, but it does fine for getting what you need, including email and news.
Speed is limited by what's supported, both over the air and your phone.
In the end, I wouldn't be dumping your ISP for your computer in favor of your cellphone exclusively. Think of your cellphone as supplementary access.

Verizon Lg Env Mobile Web 2.0 Help ?!?
You have a feature that has fallen off.....probably national access for broadband. To add this back on you must call in to *611 and have an 800 line rep add the feature back on. Did your mom give you permission to add it back? If not she may have had them completely disable the multiple stage selections needed to enable web surfing.....hope this helps.

Web 2.0 - time for an upgrade?

Web 2.0 - time for an upgrade?
Web 2.0 is a fine idea. The newer uses of technologies deliver a different web experience that is definitely better. The problem is amateur content. There's a reason why its hard to start a TV network -- because if everyone could do it, we'd have all the crap you see on youtube on prime time TV. Web 2.0 isn't the problem, it's the flood of untalented and boring contributors that is the problem. Yahoo Answers is good, Wikipedia is good, and more will come, but the quality is determined by the users and the effort they put into it, not the technology platform.
Reply:The concepts that make up the term "Web 2.0" are already here. In fact, the concepts are just a collection of older technology (AJAX, Semantics, Web Services, etc...) along with the idea of social networking/crowd sourcing.
Why not skip right over to Web 3.0 for the semantic wikis, ontologies, and AI.

Verizon Wireless + Web 2.0?
I plan on getting the Voyager soon, I have the enV.. But i want to get JUST unlimited web access, I want the same plan. Is there a way that they can add unlimited web access.. I dont want VCAST, because I dont use it or VWZ TV, or anything like that...
I just want unlimited web access.. How much is it, and can they do it?
Verizon Wireless + Web 2.0?
Dial 611 from your phone, you will probably be able to do it but I dont see why, It is packaged so that it's all included. Unlimited access is typically $45 a month. And the Voyagers browser isnt all that good.

Why does my browser fall into some endless loop and lock up when logging into Yahoo's new Web 2.0 Email?
I never had problems with Yahoo's new Web 2.0 Email Beta. But today, when I tried to login, I get to the "Loading Yahoo! Mail" statement in the center of the browser window, and then it seems to be stuck in some endless loop, as my browser almost immediately becomes unresponsive, and I have to close the program through the Task Manager. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know how to fix it?
Why does my browser fall into some endless loop and lock up when logging into Yahoo's new Web 2.0 Email?
Well as it is still in the "Beta" phase it just means that it would eventually be prone to bugs and the like... It may be an incompatibilty issue with your browser... have u updated your browser recently? maybe the update may have caused it... I noticed that it works in Mozilaa firefox and Internet Explorer, but if I use Opera or Avant Browser then I come up with some issues regarding it...

Need a software architect to help build a Discussion forum based Web 2.0 application?
I am starting a company to build a Web 2.0 application similar to a Discussion Board or Forums. I need help to make sure that the software design is scalable. I have a few programmers in India that can help do the actual coding, but need help to guide them with the design.
I see this as a part-time effort beyond your regular job. I am willing to entertain people with the right skill sets with equity or cash compensation. If you are interested please respond to the question

You're probably better off looking for experienced SEs in computer related forums as well as on monster and similar sites.

PHP 5 vs Java, which one is more suitable to develop a web 2.0 website?
I have a good idea and want to turn it into reality. It is difficult to find a partner, so I wanna do it on my own. I'm poor at programming. But I wanna have a try. My idea is a web 2.0 website with several excellent products. The problem is, which programming language am I supposed to choose, PHP 5 or Java?
PHP 5 vs Java, which one is more suitable to develop a web 2.0 website?
Finally someone asking a good question on this forum.
Anyways PHP and JAVA well the demand for PHP and for JAVA in the market is the same. Some companies prefer to go for PHP because its easy to implement and incurs less cost but at the same time you cannot perform some functions which you can with JAVA like EJB which brings in the concept of distributed computing and servlets which allows faster processing of users request and also less overload on the server side.
Well now that you mention it i am also developing an application which is Web 2.0 based, i am using Java, EJB3.0, in the back end and mysql as the back end database.
I front end i am using JSF, HTML, CSS etc for the front end development.
I am using netbeans 6.0 as the IDE and java creator.
if you are looking for someone to work with you on the project i can join your team, send me a mail if you are interested.
Reply:Do you mean Java or javascript? (they're not the same)
Neither of those is an apples to apples comparison with PHP. They are generally used for different purposes.
In the case of web 2.0, you will likely need PHP, and possibly javascript. Probably not Java.
Consult a professional web developer, who can explain the differences in those programming languages and make more specific recommendations based on your unique situation.
Reply:as far as i understand the 2.0 it basically delivering application to the user, interacting with web sites.
php is server side and java is the opposit - the 2.0 is trying to do somthing in bettween where the person does not need neccecerily the server side to run the program but he does need to interact with the server,
in short you may need both
check these languages
ajax, (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML)
Hop - is a new higher-order language designed for programming interactive web applications
Reply:I prefer PHP... Do you need someone to work with?, I also have many websites under construction, and I'm on my own!. Let me know if you need help, I'm really good at coding.

Which is more efficient to get exposure, posting article or web 2.0?
submitting article to me seems good but is costly to submit one, and have to spend time writing one
now i want to focus majorly promoting using web 2.0, like squidoo and myspace
needs some advice
Which is more efficient to get exposure, posting article or web 2.0?
Article marketing is a great way to get targeted traffic to your site, but the potential for promoting on social networking sites is huge. You will need to put some effort into article marketing, but there are some free resources where you can post your articles. If it was up to me, I would probably do both methods in order to drum up sales.

Why do media conservatives (?) like Levin and Malkin believe the "Web 2.0" nonsense replaces pro reporting?
It's absolute garbage. The professional reporters and journalists are certainly biased towards the liberal side, but to believe that the utopian "Web 2.0" and Internet garbage replaces on-site reporting and journalism is nonsense. I've also heard nonsense like that the newspapers are going broke when in fact they're going on-line. Their economic situation's worsening, but it's not anywhere near bankruptcy or anything like that. What gives?
Why do media conservatives (?) like Levin and Malkin believe the "Web 2.0" nonsense replaces pro reporting?
Hmm, thats a new one for me
I will have to research this more...
Reply:What gives is the fact that increasing numbers of Americans with common sense are realizing that mainstream news sources are pushing their own political agenda and that the internet news is replacing print and TV news as a source of information for those who demand accuracy instead of bias. The "professional reporters", as you put it, are no longer professional. Using terms like "garbage" and "nonsense" doesn't change the facts.

What's the definition to Social media and Web 2.0?
What's the definition for the two terms «Social media» and «Web 2.0»?
What's the definition to Social media and Web 2.0?
Social media is an emerging term used by marketers to describe the “blogosphere of information, opinion, insight, speculation, and perspective,” in the words of Chris Shipley. The blogon 2005 conference, held in NY on October 17-18, 2005 was dedicated to the business of social media. The Social Media Workgroup investigates the development of social identity in the digital world. Web 2.0, Social Software and Social Networking are issues for the Social Media Workgroup.
The term "Web 2.0" refers to what some people see as a second phase of development of the World Wide Web, including its architecture and its applications. As used by its proponents, the phrase allegedly refers to one or more of the following:
* a transition of websites from isolated information silos to sources of content and functionality, thus becoming a computing platform serving web applications to end users
* a social phenomenon referring to an approach to creating and distributing Web content itself, characterised by open communication, decentralization of authority, freedom to share and re-use, and "the market as a conversation"
* a more organized and categorized content, with a far more developed deeplinking web architecture.
* a shift in economic value of the web, up past a trillion dollars surpassing that of the dot com boom of the late 1990s.
However, a consensus upon its exact meaning has not yet been reached.

Which Hosts should I consider for a new Web 2.0 Application that deals with 'lots' of Big Video files??
I am a designer in the UK and I am creating 'yet another' video sharing site for the Web 2.0 bubble (Don't panic, it's a good one).
I need to find out what sort of hosting I should use (maybe even get a comparison between shared, dedicated and virtual etc). And to accompany this which hosting companies I should be considering?
I could have 1,000 subscribers, 100,000 (or you never know 1,000,000) subscribers so I need a scaleable solution that doesnt cost me 3 arms and 4.236 legs.
I'll be hosting personal content and profiles for my users so it is VERY important that my host is Secure , reliable and I have Guaranteed Bandwidth for my users.
I plan to offer 50+Gb Bandwidth Transfer and 10+Gb Storage for each user. I do understand that Bandwidth costs money and therefore a lot of hosting plans Oversell for the majority of users who are not going to maximize the bandwidth offered to them.
I need your advice/answers to help me find a trusted partner for hosting my service. Thank You

Hi,
I have a friend that just found a web hosting company that supplies unmetered bandwidth (without restrictions). He's been saying a lot of nice things about midPhase since he transferred from his last host. You can find them at http://www.midphaseoffers.com/ for more information.
If I remember right, I think he said he had a shared hosting plan with them with unmetered bandwidth, support for unlimited domains, a lot of disk space (for your videos) and a nice 30-day guarantee.
The site above should also provide you with a comparison for midPhase shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting plans. I hope this helps.
Good luck,
PhantomT

What is the start up cost for a web 2.0 business?
How much does it cost to set up a web 2.0 business? Just the setting up of the website interface etc.
What is the start up cost for a web 2.0 business?
Well, web hosting usually costs you about 5$ per month for a starter type account, and the domain costs about 8$ per year UNLESS you get free hosting, which usually has ads forced on your pages, and you don't get your own domain; I would recommend just paying, it really isn't that much money.. To have somebody design you a site and code it would cost you anywhere from 50-200$, depending on who you ask to do it. My friend is extremely professional at it. He charges about 80-90$. E-Mail me at Got2Blink at gmail dot com for more info =)
Reply:i heard some sites offer free optin to make websites try searchin on google

Where to find people for to start a web 2.0 company?
Hello,
I am a computer science major at UCLA pursuing my B.S. and I'm really interested in web 2.0. I have a lot of really great ideas and I know how to do most of the programming involved to start the companies that I want to start. But I want to build a quality team to help me out, where is the best place to meet people that would be prone to join me in my crusade to revolutionize the internet.

Require white papers on the benefits of Web Services to Web 2.0 based products?
Hi,
I would like some material which I can use as reference. They have to be in the form of accredited white papers and I will probably need between 5 and 10 listings of how Web Services Technologies can benefit Web 2.0 based technologies.
Any helpful information is most appreciated.

What is the best language to write web 2.0 applications in?
-PHP is a popular language for database driven sites.
-Java is used for "AJAX" websites.
-Ruby on Rails is getting a lot of attention.
-Python is very popular in some circles.
What is the best language to write web 2.0 applications in and why?
What is the best language to write web 2.0 applications in?
Since Web 2.0 has more to do with methodology than technology, any grouping of technology that serves the purpose of making your site interactive, collaborative and customizable pretty much fits the bill.
Which means, basically, any server-side language will work fine, provided you approach the problem with a good solution.
AJAX is just jargon for HTML, JavaScript and any old server-side scripting language, be it PHP, ASP.NET, JSP, Python, Perl, Ruby, whatever.
You do need a server-side language to help you serve AJAX; which you decide to use depends on a variety of factors, and no one language is better than another.
Java is not used for AJAX Web sites, as you state. Java is another server-side scripting language that is every bit as suitable for use in AJAX as any other server-side language.

me uses for Ajax interactions are the following:
*
Real-time form data validation: Form data such as user IDs, serial numbers, postal codes, or even special coupon codes that require server-side validation can be validated in a form before the user submits a form. See Realtime Form Validation for details.
*
Autocompletion: A specific portion of form data such as an email address, name, or city name may be autocompleted as the user types.
*
Load on demand: Based on a client event, an HTML page can fetch more data in the background, allowing the browser to load pages more quickly.
*
Sophisticated user interface controls and effects: Controls such as trees, menus, data tables, rich text editors, calendars, and progress bars allow for better user interaction and interaction with HTML pages, generally without requiring the user to reload the page.
*
Refreshing data and server push: HTML pages may poll data from a server for up-to-date data such as scores, stock quotes, weather, or application-specific data. A client may use Ajax techniques to get a set of current data without reloading a full page. Polling is not the most effecient means of ensuring that data on a page is the most current. Emerging techniques such as Comet are being developed to provide true server-side push over HTTP by keeping a persistent connection between the client and server. See this blog entry on Comet using Grizzly for more on the development of server push with Java technology.
*
Partial submit: An HTML page can submit form data as needed without requiring a full page refresh.
*
Mashups: An HTML page can obtain data using a server-side proxy or by including an external script to mix external data with your application's or your service's data. For example, you can mix content or data from a third-party application such as Google Maps with your own application.
*
Page as an application: Ajax techniques can be made to create single-page applications that look and feel much like a desktop application. See the article on the use of Ajax and portlets for more on how you can use portlet applications today.
Though not all-inclusive, this list shows that Ajax interactions allow web applications to do much more than they have done in the past.

Reply:Well from everything I have done and seen, I'll say PHP and Ajax are both VERY VERY good choices to get your hands dirty in.
PHP is easy to learn and practice with because it is free. I don't know anything about AJAX except I keep seeing it EVERYWHERE, especially when reading about what web 2.0 is in the first place!
Reply:Java and Ajax are client side scripts (they are executed by the browser), while the others are server side scripts (they are sent to the server, and the result sent back to the browser).
All of them are are popular. I don't really think it counts, as long as you respect the basic guidelines of web 2.0
